Some time ago, a student of mine once asked me ‘What sort of people do you like?’ and my immediate response was ‘Ones that hand their work in on time.’ I thought about his question for a few moments and replied ‘People that are passionate, honest, with a story to tell and a sense of community.’
Those qualities are certainly ones that drew me to Newport based Saul Wilks when I discovered him on Instagram some time ago. We seemed to have a common interest in music, Welsh identity, football and the clothing associated with those scenes. There was something that really resonated with me about Saul and that was his ability to share a tale and the passion that shone through his words and photos.
Saul recently took the leap and started his own clothing brand called Creu; the Welsh word for ‘create’. It was a brand that ‘took inspiration from everyday surroundings; the peaks of the Brecon Beacons, to the banks of the Usk.’ Had I not known Saul, the fact that this was a brand ‘created in Wales, born from passion’ and with a nod to the landscape and local identity, I would have been drawn to it like a shot anyway.
Creu’s first release was the Somerton Parka and came in Sunflower yellow and Mulberry purple. The latter sold out quickly while there are a limited number left of the yellow version. This model draws inspiration from the boxy foul weather jackets worn on the Newport Docks but has been given the addition of extra pockets to give it a modern take.
The jackets are constructed from a 7 ounce duck cotton; a material that’s durable and ages beautifully with age and wear. It has a 65:35 inner lining ‘so it can keep the unpredictable South Walian weather at bay.’
As someone who has a longstanding (some might say unhealthy) interest in jackets, especially bright ones, the Somerton Parka is a beautiful piece of KIT. The cut, materials and details are second to none. It’s a jacket that has its place on the terrace on a Saturday afternoon or out in the wilds and there aren’t many jackets that can have a foot in both those camps. I also love objects that have a story and it certainly has this with its nod to the dockers of Newport.
With a limited run of pastel rugby jerseys being released in the next couple of weeks, these are exciting time for Creu. To shop the Somerton Parka or read his brilliant ‘musings’ about the landscape that inspired him, please head to his site here
