EAT : IDRIS STORES, CORRIS

I’ll admit two things about the village of Corris. Firstly, it’s a place that’s fascinated me ever since I first saw it; a village hidden away and flanked by vast forests. Secondly, I’ve always driven right through it and never stopped. The reason for the latter wasn’t because it was the type of place where you put your foot down to get out of there but purely because you had to pass through it get to where you wanted to go. That was until I took a wrong turn on our way home and stumbled upon a real gem that made me park up and explore.

Nestled on a street beneath the main route through Corris, was Idris Stores. Call me shallow but it had me on the hook with its beautiful exterior and was reeling me in towards its door as soon as I saw that it was called Idris, one of my favourite Welsh names.

Stepping over the threshold, my eyes widened as I was greeted by a beautifully designed interior and shelves stocked high and wide with vivid goods. A pet peeve of mine is when people say ‘I wasn’t expecting something like this here. In places like Manchester or Liverpool, yes, but not here in rural Wales’. But, I found myself thinking ‘This? In Corris?’ As I was about to chastise myself for thinking like this I spotted the ‘Straight outta Corris’ parody shirt of NWA’s 1988 album and again asked myself ‘West Coast hip-hop reference in Mid-Wales village?’

Inside, I was immediately struck by the welcoming and relaxed atmosphere, with locals and visitors warmly chatting away to each other. The owners were so friendly and humble when I told them how incredible their place was. The menu and produce available was really inspiring and the store was filled with the inviting smells of home-cooked food.

In their own words, Idris Stores is ‘a village store, coffee shop and little gallery nestled in amongst the pine trees, forest tracks and hills surrounding Corris’. In all honesty, it felt like more than that. It felt like a vibrant hub for the community; the gentle but vital heartbeat for a village where perhaps that heartbeat had previously slowed with the loss of local industries.

The days of driving through Corris without stopping are gone and I’ll be making a point of calling at Idris Stores whenever I’m in the area. If you find yourself in this neck of the woods, I’d thoroughly recommend you take a pause in your journey and pop in.
